FAQs

♦ Who should turn in assignments/exams?

Only students who agreed to submit are required to submit completed assignments/exams. Check your email to see if you received a message with instructions or ask us (airo@hawaii.edu).

♦ Assignments/exams from which courses?

Check your email. We emailed you a list of the courses--all general education courses. Let us know if you did not receive the email.

♦ What if I don't have everything?

Turn in what you do have. Let us know what's missing. (For next semester, help us by saving your assignments and exams.)

♦ My professor will not give me my exams.

The Assessment Office can ask the professor if he/she will send your exam(s) directly to the Assessment Office. Let us know if you want us to contact your professor(s).

♦ I can't decide what to turn in.

Read the examples on the instruction sheet. Call 956-6669 or email airo@hawaii.edu for more help.

♦ What I have isn't good.

We still want it. Please turn it in. We need to see the “bad” and the “good” so we can help professors improve their courses.

♦ Do I turn in graded or not graded assignments/exams?

We prefer ungraded, "clean" assignments/exams but we will accept graded assignments/exams too.

♦ Drafts too?

No drafts needed. Please turn in the final version

♦ Can I scan and email?

Yes. Email PDF or picture file to airo@hawaii.edu.

♦ What will happen to my assignments/exams?

We will remove personal identifiers (names, courses). Then, faculty members will read and discuss everyone's assignments/exams to determine where, in general, UH Mānoa students are strong and weak. The results will be used to guide improvements in general education courses.

♦ Other questions or concerns?

No worries, just contact us.

Who is participating?

251 first-year students who entered UHM as freshmen/women in fall 2010.

What do students do if they participate?

Each semester, students will complete 3 online surveys. Some surveys will be short and take 10-15 minutes to finish; at least one survey each semester will take 30-45 minutes to complete.

One group of students will also be in a 90 minute discussion group once a year and turn in copies of 1-2 assignments and/or exams from their general education classes.

This project started in fall 2010 and continues through students' sophomore, junior, and senior years.

All participants signed a consent form.

What's in it for the students?

Students will receive UHM Bookstore gift cards (or equivalent) depending on their level of participation:

• $75 each year=surveys only
• $200 each year=surveys, discussion group, and copies of assignments/exams

Payment will be in two installments.

Students may also enjoy knowing they are helping UHM improve teaching, learning, and the "Mānoa Experience." They are making UHM a better place for all students.

We will use what we discover to improve teaching and to make the "Manoa Experience" better. This, in turn, will better equip UHM students for success in the workforce.

We want to find out

• what helps students learn and what hinders their learning
• what level of proficiency students have in general education core areas (writing, speaking, ethical reasoning, etc.)
• what students' "Mānoa Experience" is
