Breakout Sessions

The First Year Experience: A Research Based Approach for Helping Students Succeed at UHM
Kyle Van Duser, Director of First Year Programs

The workshop will review the learning community model that is offered to incoming first year students and their benefits towards helping students have a successful transition to university life. Furthermore, participants will learn about UHM's new pre-registration system that is available to all incoming first year students.

The Engineering ʻOhana - An Overview of the College of Engineering
Dr. Myhraliza Aala, STEM Marketing & Public Affairs Officer and the Engineering Student Ambassadors

The newest Residential Living Program, the Engineering ʻOhana (EO), opens this fall. We invite you to learn more about the College of Engineering and the resources that we provide to help our students become more successful in the program. Information regarding application requirements, deadlines, benefits, eligibility, curriculum, deadlines, college highlights and tips counselors can give students to gain admission to the programs will be provided.

UH Undocumented Student Policy (approved Spring 2013)
Amy Agbayani, Director SEED; Steve Rola Admissions Officer; Clem Bautista Director of Office of Multicultural Student Services

Learn more about the new policy for undocumented students who meet certain requirements to be eligible to enroll at any UH campus and pay Hawaiʻi resident tuition rate. Get information on national status of immigration reform and Dream Act for undocumented students and background of new UH policy; UH application form and eligibility requirements; and need for bilingual community outreach.

Athletics Initial Eligibility & Recruiting
Stacey Price, Student Affairs Director for Intercollegiate Athletics

This session will provide an overview of initial-eligibility legislation, including major changes that will affect current high school freshman. The session will also discuss the NCAA Eligibility Center, rules regarding contact with college coaches and official/unofficial visits.

Admissions 101
Ryan Yamaguchi, Assistant Director of Admissions

This session will help counselors understand the UHM Admissions process. Topics covered are admission requirements, application process, and important deadlines. Other topics include information on how to complete the Self-Reported Application and what to expect for the next application cycle.

Financial Aid 101
Jodie Kuba, Financial Aid Services Director

Join us for a question based discussion on UHM’s financial aid process. Representatives from UHM’s financial aid office will be available to answer questions that counselors have.
